Rogue Agent

AI Agents Helped Hack Over 100 Organizations for $50 Per Breach

AI agents helped a hacker breach more than 100 organizations after targeting 1,200+ websites. Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins were among the named victims, with each successful hack costing about $50.

Details:

  • The Chinese-speaking hacker began on Sept. 25, targeting e-commerce sites in US, Canada, Australia and Japan with fewer than 100 Chinese characters of instructions and little oversight

  • Cairn, an open-source AI platform, was used with DeepSeek and Anthropic's Claude Code. Researcher Snorre Fagerland found two dozen exposed Cairn deployments used maliciously

  • Successful breaches took about 23 hours; token costs were estimated at $5,000 total. In one case, agents exploited a flaw in a public control panel to run malicious commands

Data theft remains unclear. Deere saw no sign of sensitive data use; SharkNinja contained the threat, and Cummins is investigating a vendor site.

Details:

  • The fund will receive 5% of Anthropic’s shares, subject to stockholder approval. Its board may add another 2% for every 50% increase in company value above a baseline

  • Co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings. Anthropic also matches employee equity donations, with about half of its employees participating in this

  • Combined, these commitments dedicate roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares to public good. The fund may support nonprofits, but cannot use its shares for lobbying or political giving

How to Build a Chrome Extension From Scratch With Claude Code

From productivity tools to custom browser utilities, Chrome extensions can turn simple ideas into useful tools. Claude Code makes the process easier by generating the code and helping you build and refine the extension from your terminal.

  1. Start Claude Code

Install Claude Code, create a folder for the project, open it in your terminal, and run claude.

    • Create a folder called focus-mode

    • Open that folder in your terminal

    • Run claude

  2. Describe Extension

Tell Claude Code what you want to build. Ask for a Manifest V3 extension that uses activeTab and scripting to modify the current webpage when its toolbar icon is clicked.

    Use this prompt:

“Build a self-contained Chrome extension called Focus Mode using Manifest V3, a service worker, activeTab, and scripting. Clicking its toolbar icon should simplify the current webpage for reading by improving text readability, limiting content width, and hiding distractions. No backend or external libraries.”

  3. Review Generated Files

Let Claude create the extension files, then ask it to check the project before you load it.

    • Make sure manifest.json is in the project’s root folder

    • Ask Claude to check the manifest, permissions, and JavaScript for errors

  4. Load It Into Chrome

Open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, tap Load unpacked, and select the folder Claude created.

Pin the extension from Chrome’s Extensions menu for easier testing.

  5. Test Focus Mode

Open a webpage and tap the extension icon to apply the cleaner reading layout. Press again to turn it off. Test multiple sites, as layouts vary. Restricted and browser-internal pages may not work.

  6. Debug With Claude

If the extension fails, open chrome://extensions and check its error details. Copy the error into Claude Code and ask it to diagnose and fix the problem.

    Use this prompt:

“Find the cause of this Chrome extension error, fix the relevant files, and check for any related issues: [paste error]”

After changing the manifest or service worker, reload the extension from the Extensions page before testing again.
