Samsung Faces Major Profit Drop Due to AI Chip Challenges

Samsung is set to report a 39% drop in Q2 profit to 6.3 trillion won ($4.62B), its weakest in six quarters. Delays in supplying AI memory chips to Nvidia have hurt its position, while SK Hynix and Micron surge ahead, fueling investor concerns.

Details:

  • Samsung’s HBM revenue remained flat, pressured by US restrictions on advanced chip sales to China and ongoing delays in Nvidia’s certification of its 12-layer HBM3E chips, though similar chips are being supplied to AMD

  • The smartphone division held steady with strong sales, helped by retailers stockpiling ahead of potential US tariffs, providing some cushion against weak semiconductor results

  • US trade policies threaten operations, including Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on foreign smartphones, upcoming July 9 reciprocal tariffs, and possible limits on using US tech at Samsung’s China-based chip plants

Samsung stock is up just 19% this year, trailing the KOSPI’s 27.3% gain. On Monday, shares fell 1.9% while the market rose 0.3%, highlighting investor concerns over AI chip delays and US trade risks.

Researchers Caught Adding Hidden AI Prompts to Influence Paper Reviews

A troubling trend shows researchers embedding hidden instructions in papers to manipulate AI review tools. Nikkei Asia found some use invisible text to sway AI toward positive reviews, risking peer review’s integrity in the digital age.

Details:

  • The investigation found 17 papers on arXiv with hidden AI prompts, often in white text or tiny fonts. These prompts told AI to give only positive reviews or praise qualities like impact and novelty

  • The papers came from researchers at 14 institutions across eight countries, including top universities like Columbia, University of Washington, Waseda, and KAIST. Most were in computer science, suggesting experts use AI knowledge to gain an edge

  • A Waseda professor defended hidden prompts as a way to counter "lazy reviewers" relying on AI, despite many conferences banning AI use in peer review

As AI grows in academia, this case highlights rising challenges to research integrity. The fight between those manipulating AI and those defending it will intensify as technology advances in publishing.
