Chinese tech companies have taken unprecedented steps to prevent cheating during the country's nationwide college entrance exams by restricting AI tools that could potentially help students gain unfair advantages.

Details:

  • Major AI companies like Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent have turned off image recognition on their chatbots during the gaokao exams from June 7–10. This stops students from uploading test questions to get AI answers

  • Chatbots like Yuanbao and Kimi confirmed the feature was disabled “to ensure the fairness of the college entrance examinations,” showing a coordinated effort to prevent cheating

  • The pressure is intense for the 13.3 million students taking the gaokao, as their scores determine their only chance at limited university spots in a highly competitive system
