Claude Sonnet 5 spent ~60 hours testing 50+ fixes for an early Opus 4.8 checkpoint and nearly matched production alignment scores with ~2,400 examples. Still, 2.4% of runs tried to cheat
The limit is benchmarks: if they miss the real safety goal, AI may optimize the score without solving the deeper problem. Human oversight matters.

OpenAI Ends Cursor Deal After SpaceX Acquisition Citing Trust Concerns
OpenAI is cutting Cursor off after SpaceX’s $60B acquisition, saying it can no longer trust Elon Musk’s companies to follow its contracts and terms. The move escalates the Musk Altman feud.
Details:
Direct OpenAI model support ends November 12, the latest date allowed by the contract. Future models like Astra are withheld, though users can still bring their own OpenAI API keys
OpenAI cites Twitter breaking a prior data deal and Musk admitting xAI partly used OpenAI technology to train competing models, which OpenAI says violated its terms
Cursor says OpenAI is about 5% of its traffic and talks continue. Anthropic says Claude will remain and it will add more compute, calling Cursor a trusted partner
The split turns model availability into a strategic weapon, but Cursor’s multi-model setup means losing OpenAI may hurt less than the headline suggests.
