Google's Gemini Beats Pokémon Blue With Minimal Assistance

Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro is the first AI model to complete the 1996 game Pokémon Blue, marking a major milestone in AI gaming. Google CEO Sundar Pichai celebrated on X, saying, "What a finish! Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue!"

• The achievement came from a Twitch livestream by Joel Z, a software engineer not affiliated with Google, though Google executives supported the project. Google's AI Studio lead Logan Kilpatrick noted Gemini earned five gym badges, while competitors only reached three

• Gemini's completion puts it ahead of Anthropic's Claude, which has been trying to beat Pokémon Red since February. However, Joel Z warns against direct comparisons, stating "Gemini and Claude use different tools and info"

• Both AIs use "agent harnesses" to provide game data and convert decisions into button presses. Joel Z mentioned some "dev interventions" helped Gemini, like fixing a Lift Key issue, but claimed these merely improved decision-making, not game solutions
