OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Agent That Can Control Your Computer and Automate Tasks

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Agent, an advanced AI that can operate a full virtual computer to complete complex tasks for users. This marks a major step beyond typical chatbots, signaling OpenAI’s bold move into the rapidly expanding AI agent space.

Details:

• ChatGPT Agent uses a custom model built from OpenAI’s Operator and Deep Research. A small team (20–35 people) developed it to handle complex tasks using tools like browsers and terminals. In demos, it planned date nights, wrote reports, and automated parking requests

• The agent runs on a virtual computer with expanded tools. Complex tasks may take 15–30 minutes but run in the background. It asks for approval before key actions and includes safety checks

• Rolling out today to Pro, Plus, and Team users via “agent mode” or “/agent.” Enterprise and Education users will receive it later this summer. Financial actions are blocked, with “Watch Mode” pausing activity on finance sites. No ETA for EEA or Switzerland

Meta Declines to Support EU AI Code of Practice Before Law Takes Effect

Meta has declined to join the EU’s voluntary AI code of practice, heightening tensions between Big Tech and European regulators. With upcoming AI laws just weeks away, this move hints at wider industry pushback against EU oversight.

• Meta’s global affairs head Joel Kaplan called the EU’s AI rules “overreach,” saying they create legal uncertainty and exceed the original Act’s scope. Meta warns this could stall AI progress and hurt European businesses

• The EU’s code of practice requires AI updates, bans training on pirated data, and enforces opt-out rights. The broader AI Act bans “unacceptable” uses like cognitive manipulation and regulates “high-risk” areas like biometrics and hiring

• Tech giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Mistral AI have pushed back, seeking delays. But the EU is holding firm. Rules for high-risk AI start August 2, with full compliance due by August 2027

Meta’s refusal marks its strongest challenge yet to EU AI rules, potentially setting a key precedent for how other tech giants respond as enforcement approaches.
