DeepSeek Latest Model Suspected of Training With Gemini
DeepSeek’s latest R1 model is making waves in the AI world with standout performance on math and coding tasks. But controversy is growing, as researchers suspect it may have been trained using outputs from Google’s Gemini.

Melbourne developer Sam Paech flagged striking similarities between DeepSeek’s R1-0528 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, noting the models use nearly identical wording and phrasing
Another developer pointed out that DeepSeek’s “thought traces”—its step-by-step reasoning—closely mirror those of Gemini, adding to concerns about possible overlap
This isn’t the first incident. Past reports showed DeepSeek models sometimes identifying as ChatGPT, and OpenAI and Microsoft previously detected major data leaks through accounts tied to DeepSeek
Model distillation is common, but most firms ban using their outputs to build rivals. OpenAI requires ID checks; Google summarizes model traces to protect IP.

French startup Mistral is entering the “vibe coding” scene with Mistral Code, an AI assistant in private beta for JetBrains and VS Code. It steps into a competitive field alongside Windsurf, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot.

Mistral Code builds on the open source Continue project, combining models like Codestral, Devstral, and Mistral Medium to support code tasks across 80+ languages
Companies such as Capgemini, Abanca, and SNCF are already using it, with deployment options ranging from cloud to air-gapped on-prem setups for high security
It also offers enterprise features like private repo fine-tuning, detailed admin controls, and usage analytics. Mistral plans to feed improvements back into the Continue project
This marks a major step for Mistral, founded last year with over €1.1B raised, as it rolls out specialized coding models and Le Chat Enterprise, cementing its spot in the rapidly growing AI tools market.
