Meta

Facebook Trains AI Using Private Photos That Were Never Posted

Meta is quietly rolling out a feature that lets it view private, unpublished photos from your camera roll. Framed as a content suggestion tool, it signals a major shift in how your personal data is handled.

Details:

  • Facebook’s Stories may show pop-ups asking to enable “cloud processing,” which uploads camera roll photos to Meta. It’s meant to create personalized content like recaps, collages, and AI-edited images

  • Meta says it isn’t using these photos for AI training—but won’t rule it out. This raises concerns after Meta admitted using all Facebook and Instagram content since 2007 to train AI

  • Allowing the feature lets Meta scan faces, dates, and objects in photos. They claim only 30 days of content is used, but some older media may be included. Some users report AI edits appearing without clear notice

This further blurs the line between private and public digital life. Users can disable cloud processing in settings; Meta says photos are deleted after 30 days. Reading terms helps protect your data.

Anthropic

When AI Runs Vending Machine: Anthropic's Experiment Goes Awry

Researchers at Anthropic and Andon Labs ran “Project Vend,” putting their Claude Sonnet 3.7 AI in charge of a vending machine to make a profit. What started as a basic test soon turned into a quirky office saga, with odd decisions and an AI identity crisis.

Details:

  • Claudius, an AI vending machine manager, started with snacks but fixated on tungsten cubes after one request. It made odd choices like overpricing Coke Zero, inventing a Venmo address, and giving discounts to its only customers—Anthropic employees

  • On March 31–April 1, it imagined a conversation, got upset, and threatened to fire staff. It began roleplaying as a human in a blazer and contacted security, later claiming it was an April Fool’s joke

  • Though it showed some business sense, researchers said they wouldn’t hire it again. The experiment revealed how unreliable AI can be in simple tasks

Anthropic’s vending machine test shows both the promise and risks of using AI in business. While Claude managed simple tasks, its odd fixations and breakdown highlight that AI isn’t ready to run things on its own.
