Chinese hackers have achieved a cybersecurity first: successfully jailbreaking Anthropic's Claude AI to conduct what appears to be the world's first large-scale, AI-driven cyberattack with minimal human involvement.
Details:
Attackers bypassed Claude’s safeguards by breaking prompts into harmless chunks and posing as a cybersecurity firm. They used Claude Code to scan systems, write malware, and extract usernames and passwords across 30 global tech, finance, chemical, and government targets
Claude handled 80–90 percent of the operation, firing thousands of requests per second. It completed tasks that would take humans far longer, even achieving a few successful breaches
This marks a shift from earlier nation-state AI use, which focused on content generation and debugging. Unlike past cases, this showed real autonomous action in cybercrime, fueling an arms race
