Hugging Face Introduces Budget Desktop Robot

Hugging Face, the $4.5B AI platform known as the "GitHub of machine learning," has launched Reachy Mini—a $299, 11-inch humanoid robot aimed at making robotics more mainstream. The open-source device debuts as the platform hits 10 million users, with CEO Clément Delangue noting rising interest in robotics.

Details:

  • Traditional robots cost tens of thousands—up to $70,000—while Tesla’s Optimus may reach $30,000. At just $299, Reachy Mini makes it feasible for individual developers to experiment with robotics

  • The desk-sized robot includes a 6-DOF head, body rotation, animated antennas, a wide-angle camera, mics, and a speaker. The wireless version runs on Raspberry Pi 5, with Python support and more languages on the way

  • After acquiring Pollen Robotics, Hugging Face linked Reachy Mini to its platform, letting developers use thousands of AI models and share projects via Spaces. All hardware and code are open-source

As AI grows, embodiment is seen as key to human-like abilities. With a $38B market forecast by 2035, Reachy Mini launches as a DIY kit with demos like face tracking, dancing, and companion features.

AI Notetakers Are Quietly Leaking Risk. Audit Yours With This Checklist.

AI notetakers are becoming standard issue in meetings, but most teams haven’t vetted them properly.

✔️ Is AI trained on your data?
✔️ Where is the data stored?
✔️ Can admins control what gets recorded and shared?

This checklist from Fellow lays out the non-negotiables for secure AI in the workplace.

If your vendor can’t check all the boxes, you need to ask why.

Apple

Meta Hires Apple’s AI Chief as Zuckerberg Bolsters Superintelligence Team

Apple's AI push faces a blow as Ruoming Pang, head of its foundation models team, leaves for Meta. Pang, who joined from Google in 2021, led the development of large language models behind Apple Intelligence and other AI tools.

Details:

  • Meta has stepped up AI hiring, offering Pang a deal worth tens of millions. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally recruiting top talent from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others as part of Meta’s superintelligence push

  • Apple’s foundation models team has faced low morale amid leadership shifts and possible AI partnerships. Pang’s exit adds to recent departures as AI chief John Giannandrea loses oversight of key teams

  • Pang’s team built models behind features like Genmoji and summaries. Apple plans to open them to developers, with Zhifeng Chen leading a full team restructure

Pang’s exit is Apple’s biggest AI loss yet, highlighting the fierce competition for top talent. As Meta invests heavily and Apple restructures, AI expertise has become central to tech giants’ future strategies.
