Meta Considers Massive Investment in Scale AI

Meta is reportedly negotiating a potentially record-breaking investment exceeding $10 billion in data labeling startup Scale AI, marking a significant shift in the social media giant's AI strategy.

Details:

  • Scale AI, valued at $14 billion and aiming for $25 billion, provides data labeling for machine learning. Clients include Microsoft and OpenAI. It made $870 million last year and expects to hit $2 billion by 2025

  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is investing up to $65 billion in AI this year. While rivals back external AI firms, Meta focuses on its in-house Llama model, reaching 1 billion monthly users

  • Both companies are active in defense tech. They collaborate on Defense Llama. Scale won a Pentagon contract, and Meta partnered with Anduril to build AI-powered military tools

While still unfinalized, this would be Meta's biggest external AI bet and among the largest private funding rounds ever, underscoring rising AI competition.

Google Gemini Adds Task Scheduling Feature

Google has added "scheduled actions" to Gemini for Pro and Ultra users, letting the AI handle future tasks at set times. This makes Gemini more proactive, managing both recurring and one-time tasks automatically.

Details:

  • Subscribers can request daily calendar summaries, post-event recaps, and recurring content generation like weekly blog post ideas - all delivered at specified times without manual prompting

  • Tasks can be both recurring (like daily updates) or one-off (such as summarizing an award show the day after it airs), with Google promising a simple setup process: "Just tell Gemini what you need and when, and it will take care of the rest"

  • Users manage their scheduled tasks through a dedicated "scheduled actions" page in the Gemini app settings, a feature first spotted in development by Android Authority back in April

The update moves Gemini closer to agent-like abilities, matching features like reminders and recurring actions already offered by ChatGPT.
