OpenAI Builds an AI Speaker with Former Apple iPhone Engineers

OpenAI is reportedly preparing its first AI hardware device—a screenless smart speaker built to work with ChatGPT. The companion-like gadget could mark the company's biggest step yet into consumer hardware.

Details:

  • Bloomberg reports the device will be screen-free, sync with ChatGPT, handle AI tasks around the home, and use moving mechanical parts to feel more like a companion

  • The AI is designed to learn about its owner over time, access parts of their digital life like emails, develop a personality, and provide increasingly personalized assistance

  • The product is being built with former Apple engineers behind iPhone and Mac. It differs from Apple's products and comes as OpenAI denies Apple's trade secret lawsuit allegations

The device is still under development with no launch date, but it shows OpenAI's ambition to move beyond software and bring AI into everyday life.

DeepMind CEO Calls for US AI Watchdog Before Model Releases

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has proposed a U.S.-led AI watchdog to test the most advanced AI models before release. The plan envisions a FINRA-style standards body that could begin operating later this year.

Details:

  • The proposed body would test frontier AI models for risks such as deception, cyberattacks, and biological threats. Labs would voluntarily submit models for review at least 30 days before release

  • Oversight would be based on a model's capabilities, not its source or where it was developed. Hassabis also says the body should coordinate voluntary slowdowns across frontier AI labs if needed

  • Hassabis warned that open-source AI could become significantly riskier within the next 18 months, arguing the industry needs a dedicated standards body instead of ad hoc government responses

The proposal is one of the most detailed AI governance plans yet, though questions remain about how independent an industry-funded oversight body would be.

How to Build a Mobile App Prototype With Replit

Replit Agent makes it easy to turn an app idea into a working mobile prototype. In this guide, you'll define a simple product, generate the first version, test it with Expo Go, and make targeted improvements.

  1. Set Up Tools

Install the Replit desktop app and download Expo Go on your phone for testing.

  2. Define Core Idea

Decide on the smallest version of your app that proves the idea works. Focus on one user flow, not the full product.

  3. Create Simple PRD

Ask AI to turn your idea into a short product requirements document.

    Example prompt:

"Help me write a PRD for a recipe organizer app. Users can save recipes, sort them into collections, and create shopping lists. Include core features, design requirements, and five app names. Do not recommend a tech stack."

  4. Build First Version

Paste the PRD into Replit, choose the mobile app option, and ask Replit Agent to build it. Skip extras like login or payments.

  5. Test It on Phone

Open the preview, scan the QR code, and launch it with Expo Go.

    Check for:

    • Confusing screens or buttons.

    • Missing feedback after actions.

    • Anything that feels unfinished.

  6. Improve Weakest Part

Ask Replit to fix one specific issue, such as improving navigation, making instructions clearer, or simplifying a screen.

Note: Once the core experience feels solid, you can start adding features like authentication, notifications, or payments.
