• OpenAI is teaming up with G42, an Abu Dhabi tech giant chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed. The move extends a 2023 partnership focused on advancing AI across the Middle East

• Geopolitical tensions surround the deal. G42 once had ties to Chinese firms like Huawei, raising U.S. concerns. After cutting those connections, Microsoft invested $1.5 billion and gained a seat on G42’s board

US Pushback Threatens Apple AI Expansion in China

Apple’s plan to use Chinese AI in iPhones faces U.S. backlash over national security concerns. While Apple aims to boost iPhone appeal—especially in China, a key market—officials worry it could aid China’s military AI.

Details:

• U.S. officials are probing Apple’s proposed deal with Alibaba, raising concerns over data sharing and regulation. Rep. Krishnamoorthi called the lack of transparency “extremely disturbing,” citing Alibaba’s ties to China’s military-civil fusion efforts

• Apple risks losing ground to Huawei and Xiaomi without the deal, but U.S. officials fear it could help China train AI models using iPhone user data—possibly aiding military development

• This comes after past U.S. pressure on Apple, including a push to drop a chip deal with YMTC. Apple is caught between maintaining its presence in China’s market and addressing U.S. national security concerns

Apple has not publicly acknowledged the AI deal, though Alibaba's chairman confirmed it in February. Neither Apple, the White House, nor Alibaba provided comment on the current situation.
