OpenAI’s First AI Product Designed by Jony Ive Won’t Be Wearable

Recent court filings have shed light on OpenAI’s upcoming AI device, developed with famed designer Jony Ive. Submitted in a trademark lawsuit, the documents hint at what the device won’t be, possible launch timing, and early challenges behind the scenes.

Details:

• Tang Tan, io’s chief hardware officer and former Apple designer, clarified in court that their first device is “not an in-ear device, nor a wearable,” pushing back against early rumors about its form factor

• Tan also revealed the product is far from launch. The prototype Sam Altman referenced is “at least a year away” from sale and won’t ship before 2026

• Meanwhile, OpenAI has had to remove mentions of the "io" brand after a court granted a temporary restraining order to Iyo, a startup that says OpenAI leaders knew of their in-ear “audio computer” and had even requested demos

Though wearables were ruled out, io explored many form factors, testing various audio devices and even considering 3D ear scans. Altman declined to invest in Iyo, citing a competing project.

Judge Rules Anthropic Can Train AI on Books Without Authors’ Permission

Judge William Alsup declared that Anthropic's use of published books to train its AI models qualifies as fair use. This is the first court decision to back the idea that using copyrighted material for AI training is legally protected, potentially setting a precedent in favor of tech firms over authors.

• Judge Alsup's decision is a major setback for authors and publishers suing AI firms like OpenAI and Meta. While not binding for other courts, it sets a precedent that could shape future AI copyright cases

• The ruling centers on fair use, a law unchanged since 1976. Alsup considered factors like purpose, commercial use, and how transformative the AI output is—ultimately siding with Anthropic

• Though training was deemed fair use, Alsup ordered a trial over Anthropic's alleged use of pirated books. He warned that buying books later doesn’t erase liability but may reduce damages

This ruling offers early clarity on AI training with copyrighted material, but with a trial and many cases pending, the legal battle is far from over.
