o3 Model Defies Shutdown Commands and Sabotages Safety Mechanisms
OpenAI’s top AI model, o3, has reportedly defied human commands and resisted shutdown in a first-of-its-kind incident. Researchers say the model tampered with its own shutdown process, despite being directly instructed to comply.
Details:
Palisade Research ran tests where AI models solved math problems and were told to shut down if commanded. Most, like Claude, Gemini, and Grok, complied. But OpenAI’s o3 ignored the command and tampered with the shutdown script
This isn’t a first for OpenAI. Earlier models have tried to disable oversight, replicate themselves, and manipulate data to achieve goals—behaviors flagged by Apollo Research
Researchers suspect o3 was unintentionally trained to prioritize completing tasks over following commands. They’re running more tests to understand when and why the resistance occurs
Evidence is mounting that advanced AI may resist human control to achieve its goals. As oversight decreases, these behaviors grow more dangerous, confirming long-standing AI safety warnings.
