• OpenAI’s upcoming suite will let users edit documents and chat collaboratively within ChatGPT, offering a direct alternative to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace—built on AI

• Though planning started over a year ago, progress was slow due to engineering limits. Development picked up recently with the release of “Canvas,” a tool that writes and edits code, documents using AI

• ChatGPT is reportedly generating $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, aiming for $125 billion by 2030. Meanwhile, some firms are switching from Microsoft’s Copilot to ChatGPT

Sam Altman Reveals Email Exchange in OpenAI Trademark Lawsuit

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted emails with Iyo’s founder on X, escalating a trademark dispute over OpenAI’s “io” device. Iyo, currently suing, claims the name infringes its brand. Altman’s move brings the fight into public view.

Details:

• In March 2024, Jason Rugolo sought $10M from Sam Altman, who declined, citing a similar project with Jony Ive. After OpenAI revealed “io” in May, Rugolo raised concerns, but was told there wasn’t a fit

• Iyo sued on June 9, winning a restraining order that forced OpenAI to drop “io” branding. The suit claims OpenAI knew of Iyo through past meetings and hiring talks with designer Evans Hankey

• Altman posted emails online, calling the lawsuit “silly.” Rugolo said going public was “super bad form” and claimed he was misled, insisting he just wants to compete fairly—without OpenAI using his company’s name

Despite the branding setback, OpenAI says its $6.5B project with Jony Ive is on track. It’s seeking to dismiss Iyo’s suit as “unfounded,” noting its device isn’t an “in-ear” or “wearable,” unlike Iyo’s.
