Anthropic Researcher Quits Over Fears AI Could Threaten Human Survival

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has quit, warning that the AI race is moving too fast toward superintelligence. He says the people building these systems genuinely fear they could become powerful enough to threaten us.

Details:

• Coxon spent three years on AI pretraining at OpenAI and Anthropic. He says future systems could hack major systems, transform whole fields and gain real power, while progress continues

• Anthropic alignment lead Evan Hubinger agreed. He puts the chance of AI killing all humans above 10% within a decade and says Anthropic lacks a clear plan to control superintelligence

• Coxon says competition is the trap. Each lab fears another will build superintelligence first, so everyone keeps racing. He argues labs may need to slow down together or even pause

As things stand, Hubinger says current models are low risk. His fear is what comes next if AI starts improving itself faster than safety teams can keep up.

How to Let AI Browse the Web and Complete Tasks

Imagine telling AI what you need and watching it handle the browser. Gemini in Chrome can research websites, navigate pages, fill out forms, and complete tasks with its Auto Browse feature.

1. Get Gemini in Chrome

   Update Chrome and sign in with your personal Google Account. Auto Browse currently requires you to be 18+, in the U.S., use English, and have Google AI Pro or Ultra. It's still rolling out.

2. Enable Auto Browse

   Go to Chrome → Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome and enable Let Gemini browse.

   Keep Safe Browsing on Standard or Enhanced. Auto Browse doesn't work in Incognito.

3. Give Gemini Task

   Tap Ask Gemini and describe exactly what you want done.

   Try:

   Find three highly rated 27-inch monitors under $300, compare their prices and specs, and add best one to my shopping cart. Do not place the order.

   Gemini can choose websites and complete the task across multiple steps.

4. Review Plan

   Gemini shows its planned actions before starting.

   Check that:

   • The request is understood correctly.

   • The sites and actions make sense.

   • No unwanted or sensitive action is included.

   Then press Start Task.

5. Let Gemini Browse

   Gemini will navigate the page, click, scroll, and fill information while you watch.

   You can Pause, Stop, or Take over task anytime.

6. Handle Steps That Need You

   Gemini may pause for CAPTCHAs, sign-ins, or sensitive confirmations.

   Choose Take over task, complete the step, then select Resume. With permission, Gemini can also use Google Password Manager on supported sites.

7. Check Result

   Review the completed task before relying on it. For payments or other high-impact actions, keep final control yourself and verify everything first.

Note: Start with simple research, comparisons, reservations, or information-gathering tasks before trying sensitive browser operations.
