Study Finds 20% of YouTube Videos Shown to New Users Are AI Slop
Study says YouTube’s recommendations are flooded with “AI slop,” low-quality AI content made to farm views. It finds this “brainrot” makes up over 20% of videos shown to fresh users, turning algorithmic noise into a massive global business.

Kapwing reviewed the top 100 YouTube channels in every country. It found 278 channels that are pure AI slop, totaling 63B views and 221M subscribers, with about $117M a year in revenue. In a separate test, a fresh account got 104 low-quality AI videos in its first 500 recommendations
The videos are bizarre, decontextualized, and widely watched. Big audiences in Spain, the US, and Brazil follow channels like “Bandar Apna Dost,” “Pouty Frenchie,” and “The AI World.” These channels lean on absurd visuals
Creators in places like India, Nigeria, and Vietnam fuel it. They swap algorithm tricks on Telegram and Discord, sometimes earning more than local median wages. YouTube often rewards scalable viral niches, like exploding pressure cookers
