OpenAI

OpenAI Dramatically Increases Cash Burn Projections to $115B

OpenAI expects to burn through 115 billion by 2029, an 80 billion jump from prior forecasts. The revised outlook underscores the staggering capital demands fueling the AI revolution and reshaping its financial future.

Details:

  • OpenAI’s cash burn is surging, rising from 8 billion this year to 17 billion in 2026, 35 billion in 2027, and 45 billion in 2028. The company has become one of the world’s largest renters of cloud servers to power ChatGPT and future AI models

  • To curb costs, OpenAI is building its own infrastructure, including custom data center chips and facilities. Its first AI chip, made with Broadcom, will launch next year for internal use, signaling a move toward self-reliance

  • The company is also expanding through major deals, such as a 4.5-gigawatt data center with Oracle, the $500 billion Stargate project with SoftBank, and a fresh partnership with Google Cloud to meet its vast computing needs

Achieving AI leadership demands unprecedented capital investment, raising pressing questions about long-term sustainability and rising barriers to entry.

Anthropic

Anthropic Pays $1.5 Billion in Largest Ever US Copyright Settlement

Anthropic has reached a landmark $1.5 billion settlement with authors in what's being called the largest copyright settlement in U.S. history, fundamentally changing how AI companies may need to compensate creators.

Details:

  • The settlement comes from a class-action lawsuit by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, who accused Anthropic of training its AI on pirated books. Judges issued mixed rulings: training on purchased books was deemed fair use, but using pirated libraries will go to trial.

  • Authors will receive about $3,000 per work, with 500,000 works covered. The payout could top $1.5 billion if more claims are filed, since Anthropic must pay $3,000 for each additional work. The company also agreed to destroy all downloaded files and copies of copyrighted books

  • The deal covers only past use and grants no future rights, leaving claims after August 25, 2025 open. Anthropic still faces other lawsuits, including cases from Reddit and Universal Music, as copyright battles intensify across industry

This settlement may set a costly precedent, pushing AI firms to rethink data sourcing and compensation. Authors can visit AnthropicCopyrightSettlement(.)com to check if their works are covered.

How Gemini Live Turns Your Camera into a Personal Assistant

Gemini Live lets you ask Gemini questions about things you can see — both in the real world and on your device. Previously limited to Gemini Advanced users, it's available at no cost on any smartphone.

  1. First, make sure you’ve installed the latest version of Google Gemini (Android) (iOS) on your device. Your phone (or tablet) should also be a fairly recent model.

  2. Once installed, after opening the app, tap the Live icon (three stick-like lines) in the bottom-right corner of the Ask Gemini box.

  3. Choose a voice. You’ll then enter the main Gemini Live interface. Here, you can use the pause button to put the mic on hold or tap the “X” to end the conversation.

  4. To share your camera, press the Camera icon in the bottom-left corner. Point it at the object you want to discuss, then ask your question.

  5. Want to switch to the front-facing camera? Use the camera flip icon in the bottom corner of the image. Tap the Camera icon again to turn it off.

  6. To share your screen, press the upward-facing arrow icon. Once you're on the screen you want to discuss, just ask your question aloud. Tap Share to stop screen sharing.

Some ways you can use Gemini Live:

  • Get feedback on your outfit before heading out — show Gemini what you’re wearing and ask for style suggestions.

  • Learn more about an object or plant by pointing your camera at it — Gemini can help identify it instantly.

  • Use it while cooking — show Gemini your ingredients and ask for quick recipe ideas or substitutions.
