OpenAI Introduces Study Mode to Boost Student Critical Thinking

OpenAI has launched Study Mode for ChatGPT, an innovative feature designed to transform the AI chatbot from an answer engine into a learning tool that promotes critical thinking among students.
Details:
Study Mode changes how ChatGPT works with students by asking questions instead of giving direct answers. It’s being introduced to all logged-in users across various plans, with Edu users included soon. The goal is to support deeper thinking as student usage grows
Schools first banned ChatGPT in 2022, but by 2023, many reversed course. A June study showed students using ChatGPT had lower brain activity than those using Google or working alone—raising concerns about how AI affects learning
Students can still switch out of Study Mode, and there’s no way to lock it in yet, though OpenAI may add that later. Its impact depends on whether students actually want to learn, not just complete tasks
This launch puts OpenAI in competition with Anthropic, which introduced a similar Learning Mode for Claude in April, as tech companies race to make AI more educationally beneficial while maintaining student engagement.

Google Introduces Video Overviews for NotebookLM to Enhance Visual Learning

Google's NotebookLM just added Video Overviews, bringing visual storytelling to its AI research assistant. This feature turns dense docs into easy-to-grasp visual summaries, helping users understand complex topics better.
Details:
Video Overviews offer a visual alternative to Audio Overviews, using images, diagrams, quotes, and data from uploaded files like PDFs and notes. They're great for explaining data, processes, and abstract ideas visually
Users can customize their overviews by setting focus topics, learning goals, and audience level—whether they're beginners needing help with diagrams or experts wanting deep dives on specific areas
The Studio panel supports multiple outputs in one notebook. It also adds quick tiles for key tools and lets users multitask—like listening to Audio Overviews while exploring Mind Maps or Study Guides
Video Overviews are available to all NotebookLM users in English, with more languages coming later. This visual format complements audio tools, offering flexible ways to understand research.

How Gemini Live Turns Your Camera into a Personal Assistant

Gemini Live lets you ask Gemini questions about things you can see — both in the real world and on your device. Previously limited to Gemini Advanced users, it's available at no cost on any smartphone.
First, make sure you’ve installed the latest version of Google Gemini (Android) (iOS) on your device. Your phone (or tablet) should also be a fairly recent model.
Once installed, after opening the app, tap the Live icon (three stick-like lines) in the bottom-right corner of the Ask Gemini box.
Choose a voice. You’ll then enter the main Gemini Live interface. Here, you can use the pause button to put the mic on hold or tap the “X” to end the conversation.
To share your camera, press the Camera icon in the bottom-left corner. Point it at the object you want to discuss, then ask your question.
Want to switch to the front-facing camera? Use the camera flip icon in the bottom corner of the image. Tap the Camera icon again to turn it off.
To share your screen, press the upward-facing arrow icon. Once you're on the screen you want to discuss, just ask your question aloud. Tap Share to stop screen sharing.
Here are some ways you can use Gemini Live:
Get feedback on your outfit before heading out — show Gemini what you’re wearing and ask for style suggestions.
Learn more about an object or plant by pointing your camera at it — Gemini can help identify it instantly.
Use it while cooking — show Gemini your ingredients and ask for quick recipe ideas or substitutions.
