Reddit Files Lawsuit Against Anthropic Over Unpaid Training Data

Reddit has filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, claiming the Claude chatbot maker secretly continued to scrape data from its platform despite promises to stop.

Details:

• Reddit accuses Anthropic of making over 100,000 data requests since July 2024, despite claiming it stopped crawling in May. The lawsuit calls out a gap between Anthropic’s public ethics and private actions

• Reddit’s legal head Ben Lee says the platform’s discussions are "uniquely valuable" for training language models, noting its $60M licensing deal with Google earlier this year

• Anthropic, already facing lawsuits from authors and music labels over content use, denies Reddit’s allegations and plans to defend itself

This case adds to a wave of lawsuits against AI firms, including actions by The New York Times, George R.R. Martin, and publishers like Condé Nast and Vox.
