Microsoft Bypasses The Grid For Its Massive Texas AI Data Center Build
Microsoft is planning a 2 GW AI data center campus in Pecos, Texas. The bigger story is not just more compute. It is AI companies building private power systems because the public grid cannot match their speed and scale.
Details:
The multibillion-dollar campus will be built over five to seven years, adding one of Microsoft’s largest capacity jumps and creating 6,000 construction jobs plus hundreds of permanent roles
Instead of waiting for slow grid capacity, Microsoft will fund an on-site gas plant. Chevron’s Project Kilby will supply dedicated power, start around 2028, and ramp up to 2.67 GW over time
Microsoft says this setup will help avoid local power price pressure, use closed-loop cooling, return more water than it consumes, and engage locals before data center backlash grows louder
