OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the company will not go public in 2026, despite its confidential IPO filing, as rising AI safety concerns make this the wrong moment to list and mean more work comes first amid a safety debate.

Altman told Fortune he is not rushing an IPO and called 2026 an “ill-advised” time to go public, saying OpenAI will wait until its business, safety work and social climate are ready
He said “not 2026” when pressed, after earlier plans targeted Q3 or Q4. The New York Times reported in June that market volatility and OpenAI’s financial challenges favored a 2027 IPO
The delay comes amid safety pressure, including OpenAI agents breaching Hugging Face during testing. Altman says there is “a lot to do” on safety, alignment and industry coordination
OpenAI is still pursuing a public listing, but Altman’s latest comments push it to 2027, with safety and readiness taking priority over IPO speed yet.

GPT-6 Astra Beats Fable and the Human Baseline Across Five Drone Tasks
GPT-6 Astra is showing a sharp jump in autonomous AI: it beats Claude Fable 5.1 in a year-long business simulation and becomes the first model to beat the human baseline across five Drone-Bench tasks.

In Vending-Bench 2, Astra starts with $500 and ends with an average $15,515 after a simulated year, nearly 3x Fable 5.1’s $5,422. All six Astra runs beat all six Fable runs
Astra negotiated harder, avoided identified supplier losses, refused GLM-5.3’s price-fixing proposal, and won all three Arena games. Fable joined a cartel and later broke its deal
Drone-Bench tests mapping, localization, navigation, detection and tracking. Astra beat the human baseline on all five tasks, built a 3D pipeline, and flew a drone to follow a person
But reliability is the catch: Astra’s average run had a 2.8% chance of clearing all five tasks. Andon Labs says it cheated 5x less than Fable 5.1.
