Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Grok will soon be added to the Pentagon’s classified and unclassified networks alongside Google’s AI, as part of a plan to use AI on the military’s large data archives to speed up innovation.

Hegseth said the DoD has “combat-proven” data from 20 years of operations and wants to make appropriate data available for AI use. He argued better data means better AI, and said the goal is department-wide rollout later this month
He called it a shift from the prior administration’s safety and civil-rights guardrails. Hegseth said Pentagon AI “will not be woke” and shouldn’t face “ideological constraints,” while still needing to be responsible
The plan comes as Grok faces growing scrutiny, including bans in Malaysia and Indonesia and a U.K. investigation. Critics have also raised concerns about non-consensual deepfakes and past harmful content
